An Ideal Destination in El Salvador
The Los Volcanes Complex is one of the destinations with the widest diversity of highland bird species in El Salvador. Here, the weather and seasons play a key role in bird sightings:
* Rainy Season (Local Winter): You can easily record about 25 local species in a single day.
* Dry Season (Local Summer): The average jumps to 50 species daily, considering that many birds are in the area due to the northern winter migration.
In reality, scientific studies show a total of 195 bird species throughout the Los Volcanes Complex. However, bringing the data down to the reality of the field, it is only possible to see a small percentage of them during a single day of exploration.
The Crown Jewels of the Cloud Forest
Among the most important and highly sought-after bird species in the area are:
* Bushy-crested Jay: Considered endemic to the mountainous range of northern Central America.
* Northern Emerald-Toucanet
* White-faced Quail-Dove
* White-eared Ground-Sparrow
* Green-throated Mountain-gem
* Bar-winged Oriole
* Scaled Antpitta: A species very exclusive to mountainous wetlands; therefore, it is much more feasible to appreciate it in the complex during the rainy season.

Birds fulfill a vital function within mountain ecosystems. They act as efficient seed dispersers and pollinators (like hummingbirds). Additionally, they function as natural controllers of insect populations, given that insects make up the main diet for most of them.
