Birding in the Imposible National Park

Depending on where you are lodging we will pick you up after breakfast and drive 3 hours from San Salvador, 4 hours from Suchitoto, 1.5 hours from the Ruta de Flores area, 2.5 hours from the Libertad beaches and Santa Ana, stopping if needed for coffee, bathroom and snacks.

Arriving to the area we will have a simple local fare lunch before entering the park for a 2-4 hour hike to the lookout which offers a spectacular view of about 2/3 of the park, arriving back at the park entrance as night falls.

Time for a simple dinner and a good night rest at a very rustic cabin will give us energy for the early 6:00 am for 2-3 hour hike/walk in the morning. After our morning outing we would have a simple home cooked breakfast and have time for a quick shower and to pack up for our drive back to your hotel or next destination. Birding in the Impossible National Park Different Tours Options for The Impossible Park We offer various trips that include birding in the Impossible National Park. We always use the main entrance above the San Benito community which has a long and bumpy ride to get to but offers a couple of different trails we enjoy for birding.

Our recommended tours for the Park and one I think most of our clients enjoy includes an overnight trip to the park, this generally is combined with birding in other close areas the day before and after allowing us to arrive in the afternoon where depending on the time to get settled into the very simple and rustic cabins right in front of the park entrance and then time for lunch before heading into the park for our first afternoon hike.

After the 2-4 hour hike we return for a simple country style dinner and rest. We have found that a couple of owls can be pulled into the cabin area when present and using recorded calls. After a good night’s sleep we would enter the part at sunrise for another 2-3 hour hike returning to the cabin area for a country breakfast before packing up and hitting the road for our next destination (usually the Barra de Santiago reserve area) for lunch and an afternoon of birding.

Both other common options include either just a morning of birding or just an afternoon of birding, these again generally combined with a destination the day before or the afternoon after our time in the park. Parks and Natural Area Requirements For most of what are legally referred to in El Salvador as Natural Protected Areas of which some are National Parks and other managed by different organizations or communicates it is commonly necessary to request permits to be able to enter, this process we do well in advance and even though it is done online it can take form days to a couple of weeks.

To request permits we need your full name and digital copy of your passport well in advance of your arrival to El Salvador. We commonly combine trips to the Impossible Park with tours birding nature and cultural in the Barra de Santiago, Ruta de Flores, Cerro Verde and on occasion in route to or from Antigua Guatemala.
